The travel and tourism industry includes the broad hospitality sector comprising transportation, hotel management, and tourism. The travel and tourism industry is expected to grow at 7 per cent every year. The attractive growth prospects are drawing students to pursue courses in travel and tourism. Aspirants now have plenty of options to pursue travel and tourism courses after 10th. They can go for short-term diploma and certificate courses, which will equip them with the required skills in quick time to start a career in hospitality and hotel management. There are several courses in travel and tourism after 10th offered by the Indian Institute of Skill Development and Training as well as the National Council of Hotel Management and Catering Technology. The courses are offered in online and offline modes. The details are given below.
Indian Institute of Skill Development and Training (IISDT) offers a few online certificate and diploma courses after 10th in the travel and tourism field. After completing their learning during the course, the candidates have to clear an exam, after which they will obtain the diploma/certificate. Let’s look at the courses below -
Diploma in Hospitality, Travel and Hotel Management: A 400-hour (equivalent to 1 year) course that trains students to manage operations in travel and hospitality. It covers areas which include customer service, front office operations, food and beverage service, housekeeping, travel coordination, event planning, and marketing.
Certificate in Tours, Travel and Tourism Management - A 3-month course where the students learn about the dynamics in the tourism industry. The subjects in the course include evolution of tourism, fundamentals of travel, hospitality and catering, transport for tourism and support operations.
Certificate in Hospitality Management: A 2-month course that aims at introducing students to the fundamentals of the hospitality industry. It is essentially an introductory course for students looking to pursue advanced studies in hospitality later. The subjects covered in the course include hotel operations, customer service, food and beverage services and event management
Certificate in Aviation Hospitality and Tourism Management: A 3-month course with a special focus on aviation, hospitality and tourism. The course covers subjects such as airline services, customer service, airport management, and travel agency operations
The National Council of Hotel Management and Catering Technology, which is the conducting body of the NCHM JEE entrance exam, also offers several craftsmanship certificate courses with a special focus on hotel management and food and beverage services. Let’s look at the course list below -
Craftsmanship Certificate Course in Food Production and Patisserie
A 1.5-year course with a practical focus where students are taught about subjects like Cookery; Bakery & Patisserie; Costing; Hygiene & Equipment Maintenance. Students also undergo practical training at prominent hotels as part of the course.
Craftsmanship Certificate Course in Food and Beverage Service - A 6-month course that combines theoretical and practical training and trains students for jobs in the hospitality industry. The subjects covered in the course include food and beverage service, pantry operations, menu design, ingredients, preparation and garnishing.
Craft Certificate Course in Professional Bar Tending: A 6-month course offered by IHM Hyderabad where students are professionally trained to become bartenders at leading bars and restaurants. It is a suitable course for those who are interested in the field and want to earn some money through part-time work as well.
After completing a diploma course in travel and tourism after 10th, students can get entry-level jobs with a starting salary of around 15-20 thousand per month. However, with improving skills and experience, the job roles change, and salary will also go up.
Apart from jobs, diploma holders can also start their own business after gaining experience and become entrepreneurs
