In the 21st century, the world economy relies heavily on shipping as it is cheaper and eco-friendly compared to other modes of transportation. There is no doubt then that such a magnanimous trade and transport system requires a workforce that is willing to embark on a sailor’s journey. The life of a seafarer revolves around travelling from one port to another, managing the ship, and its equipment and ensuring that the cargo reaches its destination in time. It is a demanding job that requires the seafarer to stay onboard the ship for three to six months at a stretch.

Mostly, people choose to work in the maritime industry due to the good pay scale and tax-free income. Seafarers also get a slightly better opportunity to travel the world and meet new people. You can join the merchant navy after Class 12, all you need 60 per cent or above in PCM (Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics) and those wanting to join after class 10 need to have 40 per cent or above. Selection criteria depends on clearing the entrance exam, interview, and physical examination. To work as a seafarer you also need to clear the eye test.

Anglo Eastern Maritime Academy (AEMA), Mumbai

The Academy offers a UG Diploma in Marine Engineering and Engineering. It was founded in 2009 to provide educational and technical skills in Engineering and Marine Engineering in the city of Maharashtra. Through a well-designed full-time diploma course, the institute aims to equip students with skills to excel in the field of Marine Engineering and Engineering. It has a good faculty pool that helps students achieve the skills and knowledge necessary to navigate the seas. Alongside a solid spotlight on innovative work, the course prepares the student to stay and lead from the front in their respective specialisations and earn their living. The cost of the UG diploma course in Marine Engineering is Rs. 635,000.

Samundra Institute of Maritime Studies, Mumbai (SIMS)

SIMS delivers training in post-sea, pre-sea and off-shore preparations. The institute provides training in all domains related to maritime. Students also cover subjects such as Physics, Mathematics, Navigation, Maritime History, and Chemistry while they pursue their courses from SIMS.

The cost of their courses is mentioned below:

  • BTech course fees are Rs 4.76 lakh for first year and INR 4.28 lakh for 2nd year, INR 4.29 lakh for 3rd year and INR 4.26 lakh for fourth year.

  • The fee for a diploma in marine engineering is INR 5.7 lakh per annum.

HIMT College (Hindustan Institute of Maritime Technology)

Approved by the Directorate General of Shipping (DGS), Ministry of Shipping, Government of India, the Hindustan Institute of Maritime Training (HIMT) was established in 1998. It is a well-known institute famous for the quality of education that produces talented seafarers.

HIMT offers a number of certificate courses, a B.Tech in Marine Engineering and a B.Sc. in Nautical Science. Admission to B.Tech and B.Sc courses is done on the basis of IMU-CET(Indian Maritime University Common Entrance Test) conducted by the Indian Maritime University

International Maritime Institute (IMI)

International Maritime Institute (IMI) was established in 1991 and it is approved by the Directorate General of Shipping (DGS), Ministry of Shipping, Government of India. It is graded as an A1 institute by the IRS (Indian Register of Shipping). Students can choose almost 20 post-sea and pre-sea courses. The institute has well-equipped labs, machines, ship working systems and workshops to give students a deep understanding of maritime studies. It is an advanced institute with a focus on keeping up with the changing technology in the maritime industry. The institute also conducts coaching to help students prepare for IMU-CET(Indian Maritime University Common Entrance Test).

  • B.E. / B.Tech, (2 Courses), Rs. 10 L (for 3-4 years)

Tolani Maritime Institute (TMI)

Tolani Maritime Institute (TMI) is one of the biggest maritime training institutes which offers quality education in Marine Engineering and Nautical science. The foundation for TMI was laid out in the year 1998 and is situated in Induri, Pune, Maharashtra, India. Students can choose between distance learning and on-campus courses.
